City replaces playground equipment at Peavy Park

Nov. 24, 2016

New playground equipment at Enterprise’s Peavy Park is providing youngsters with a modern, safer play space.

Enterprise Parks and Recreation Director Billy Powell said his department staff recently completed the overhaul of the play area at the park and youngsters are already utilizing it.

“They are climbing and sliding – enjoying new adventures and making memories,” he said.

The $25,000 playground stand-alone set features a spiral slide, dual slide and a fireman’s pole. It is designed for children ages 5 to 12.  Also installed was a safety surface using sand and a new border to hold the sand in place. The color of the stand-alone is a lively blue and green.

The project was needed, Powell explained, because the existing equipment at the park was more than 20 years old, resulting in the need for more and more repairs. Many of the replacement parts had been discontinued over time, so some of the equipment had been unusable.

For safety reasons, city leaders agreed to take down the old

equipment and budget for safer, modern equipment.

“We think this was extremely important,” Powell said. “This park is very heavily used by the surrounding community and by visitors who come to the practice fields. One of our priorities is keeping all of our nine parks well-maintained.”

In addition to the playground area, Peavy Park has open space set up for picnicking and for practicing baseball, softball, and soccer.

The park was named in 1986 in honor of Alfred Peavy Jr., who devoted 35 years as a teacher, administrator and coach in  the Coffee County and Enterprise school systems.

Peavy coached track, football, basketball and baseball and served as a board member on the Alabama High School Athletic Association.  Peavy, who died in 2001, is a member of both the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
