City of Enterprise News Release:

With a hard freeze and possible icy conditions forecast for the next several days, city officials are urging residents to make preparations and take proper precautions.

Mayor Kenneth Boswell and city department heads met Thursday to ensure that personnel, equipment and a plan of action are in place if the city faces hazardous wintry weather.

The National Weather Service reported Thursday that an Arctic air mass will sweep into the Southeast late Friday, sending temperatures well below the freezing mark and bringing a “small chance” of sleet or freezing rain late Friday and into the early morning hours of Saturday.

Boswell said while the chances of extremely hazardous conditions are small, he encourages everyone to be prepared because even slight unexpected changes in conditions can have a great impact on living and driving conditions. Rain or sleet combined with a forecasted low of 24 degrees can cause dangerous driving conditions.

City officials are closely monitoring the weather and, if necessary, will be sanding bridges and other key icy areas. Boswell joined Police Chief T. D. Jones in asking that everyone stay off the roads if icy conditions do develop.

Residents are also asked to prepare a supply of non-perishable items for food and drink in the event of power outages, as well as medicines and other necessary supplies. Take care of pets. Cover plants and pipes, and make sure that relatives or neighbors have a warm place to go if they do lose power or other primary heating source.

Fire Chief Byron Herring also reminds residents to use manufacturer-recommended fuel in kerosene heaters. Use precautions when using any type of heater and ensure that portable heaters are placed at least three feet from any flammable items such as a couch, bed, curtains, etc.

“We don’t want to cause alarm, but we do want to be prepared in case conditions change,” Boswell said. “We hope everyone will be monitoring the weather, and we especially ask you to check on elderly residents or others who may not have adequate heating in their homes, and see that they have a warm, safe place to stay during the coldest periods.”

Temperatures are expected to reach about 42 degrees sometime on Saturday.

For those in need of alternative shelter, the Mission Center at 231 Geneva Highway is open. Temperatures are expected to reach about 42 degrees sometime on Saturday.
